The famous quote "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" was spoken by Neil Armstrong as he took his first step on the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969. While a profound statement about the lunar landing, concept can apply to so many aspects of life right here on Earth.
Now that we've decided to answer our Call to Adventure, how do we go about doing it? One step at a time, of course!
The Significance of a Single Step
It Can Banish Overwhelm: When you break down a massive goal into tiny, manageable steps, it immediately feels less daunting. Instead of tackling the goal to "Learn a New Language," you can "Learn 3 new words today." That's a huge mental shift!
It Builds Momentum: Each tiny step you complete is a mini-victory. Small wins add up, creating a feel-good sense of progress and motivation. It's like collecting tiny gold stars—before you know it, you've got a whole galaxy!
It Allows for Course Correction: When you're moving slowly and deliberately, you have time to adjust. If one approach isn't working, you can change direction without having invested too much time or energy in the wrong approach. It's like when you explore a new city—you don't have to plan every single turn before you leave your hotel. You can follow your nose, see what's interesting, and change direction if needed
It Fosters Learning: Big leaps can be risky. Small steps allow you to learn, experiment, and refine your approach along the way. You absorb information better, build foundational skills, and gain confidence with each successful micro-achievement
In accepting Your Call to Adventure, You can resist the urge to try and sprint up the whole mountain. (That takes us back to our marathon!)
Instead, you can strap on your hiking boots, take a deep breath, and focus on just the very next step in front of you. Before you know it, you'll be at the top, admiring the view, and wondering why you ever thought it was so intimidating in the first place.
