Yesterday we discussed your Call to Adventure—the first step in the traditional hero's journey (as well as in the majority of “stories”). When we receive the call, there is no guarantee what will happen. It's all a big “unknown".
The shadowy realm of the unknown is a landscape we all encounter on our personal journey. Just like the heroes of myth and legend, we too stand at the precipice of uncharted territory, and it's natural for the heart to flutter with the whispers of "what if" or even "what if not"?
This fear of the unknown often manifests as hesitation, procrastination, or even a complete refusal to step outside our comfort zones. We might cling to the familiar, even if it no longer serves us, simply because it's known. We understand how to deal with it, for better or worse.
The call to a new adventure, however, can feel daunting precisely because the path ahead isn't clearly marked. Truth be told, we've faced the unknown plenty of times and always survived. Heading home from the hospital after birth, going to kindergarten—these were unknowns!
Heroes in stories are rarely presented with a guaranteed outcome. They face trials, adversaries, and moments of profound uncertainty. Yet, it is in venturing into the great unknown that they discover their strengths, uncover hidden talents, and ultimately transform into a better version of themselves. The challenges we face (the unexpected detours, the moments when we feel lost) are the crucibles in which our character is forged.
The fear of the unknown, while seemingly powerful, doesn't have to be a warning of danger. It can be a signpost, indicating something significant lies just beyond our current understanding. It's the edge of our growth, the boundary of our potential waiting to be expanded.
Consider the feeling of excitement that often tinges fear. That's your inner hero stirring! It's the intuition that there's something more waiting to be experienced. Embracing the unknown isn't about being fearless; it's about being brave enough to take a step through the fear.

Action Prompt: Take One Small Step
Think about one small area in your life where you feel a pull towards something new or different, but the fear of the unknown is holding you back. It doesn't have to be a monumental leap. It could be trying a new hobby, striking up a conversation with someone new, researching a different career path, or simply taking a different route on your daily walk.
Identify that one small step you can take today — something that feels just a little bit outside your comfort zone. It might feel insignificant, but that single step is your first venture into the unknown. Notice how you feel before, during, and after. Acknowledge any fear that arises, but also recognize the courage within you that allows you to move forward.
As they say, every grand adventure begins with a single step. And if it worked out for Bilbo, it can work out for you!
