Grounded in Gratitude — Day 20

Counterintuitive Gratitude
(the Advantages of Adversity)

Being thankful for adversity might seem counterintuitive, but it can speed our individual progress via personal growth, resilience, and overall wellbeing.

Adversity often forces us to confront our limitations and vulnerabilities. Being thankful for it helps us shift our focus from what we've lost or what's difficult to what we can learn and gain from the experience.

There is no doubt overcoming challenges builds mental and emotional toughness. It builds character traits like perseverance, determination, courage, and patience.

Adversity often pushes us outside our comfort zones, calling for us to develop new skills, perspectives, and coping mechanisms. Navigating our own challenges can make us more understanding and empathetic when it comes to the struggles of others. Gratitude for our own journey can foster a greater sense of connection and compassion.

Sometimes, adversity can inadvertently lead to unexpected positive outcomes or even open doors to new possibilities that we wouldn't have encountered otherwise. Thankfulness helps us recognize these silver linings. The successful navigating of tough times boosts our self-belief and confidence in our capabilities. Think about the people you know who have been through the ringer. Didn’t they come through it stronger than ever?

Your action prompt is to take an unvarnished look at the most difficult thing you’ve ever gone through and jot down all the ways you grew and triumphed once you were on the other side of the situation. What new doors opened? And more important, how can you use what you learned to help you overcome your next challenge?

Not convinced overcoming difficulties is worth it? Ask any mother who's been through difficult labor and delivered a healthy child.
