Grounded in Gratitude — Day 6

Embodying Gratitude

Some of us (heck, most of us) are overly harsh on ourselves when it comes to our physiques and their perceived “imperfections”. But we would be much better served by loving our bodies and appreciating all they do for us—because it’s a lot!

Gratitude helps you appreciate what your body can do rather than focusing on how it looks or functions according to societal standards. You begin to value your ability to walk, to breathe, to hug, to create—to experience the world. When you're thankful, you're less likely to engage in self-criticism and negative comparisons that strip your self-worth.

People who are grateful for their bodies are more likely to engage in healthy habits like exercise, nutritious eating, and getting enough rest, because they value their wellbeing. And a more positive and less anxious mindset can lead to improved sleep quality. (Sounds pretty good to those of us who love sleep!)

Your action prompt today is to choose 3 or more of the following body-positive suggestions to do regularly:

  • Focus on Functionality — Make a conscious effort to appreciate what your body allows you to do every day. Think about simple things like walking, seeing, hearing, tasting, and feeling.
  • Practice Daily Affirmations & Journaling — Start or end your day by stating things you are grateful for about your body. Emphasize its abilities and strengths. Regularly write down specific things you appreciate about your body. This helps solidify your positive thoughts.
  • Move Your Body in Ways You Enjoy — Exercise should be a celebration of what your body can do, not a punishment. Find activities you find pleasurable.
  • Nourish Your Body with Care — Choose foods that make you feel good and provide the energy you need. Appreciate the nourishment your body receives.
  • Practice Self-Compassion — Be kind and understanding towards your body, especially on days when you might not feel your best.
  • Limit Negative Self-Talk and Comparisons — Become aware of negative thoughts about your body and actively challenge them. Avoid comparing yourself to unrealistic ideals in the media.
  • Appreciate Your Body's Uniqueness — Recognize that every body is different and has its own beauty and strengths.
  • Thank Your Body for Getting You Through Tough Times —  Acknowledge its resilience in overcoming illness, injury, or challenging experiences.
  • Use Your Senses to Appreciate — Pay attention to the sensations your body allows you to experience—the warmth of the sun, the taste of food, the feeling of a hug.
  • Surround Yourself with Body-Positive Influences — Follow social media accounts and engage with media that promotes body acceptance and diversity.
  • Practice Gratitude During Everyday Activities — While showering, thank your skin for protecting you. While eating, thank your digestive system.

PS: if you could use some support in loving your body more & keeping off excess pounds,
